It’s been 5 years since the Scout Association launched the newest section of the Scouting family called Squirrel Scouts.
Squirrel Scouts are for ages 4-6 and provide the first steps into Scouting, a place to belong and skills for life!. Squirrels are the start of the journey that like all of Scouts is for Boys and Girls alike, and includes Beaver Scouts (6-8), Cub Scouts (8-10.5) Scouts 10.5 -14) Explorer Scouts (14-18), which then leads into Network and Adults.
Each section has collective noun to describe the section. A Section of Squirrels is called a Drey, while Beavers are in a Colony, Cubs are in a Pack, Scouts are in a Troop and Explorers are a Unit.
Our first Squirrel Drey is named Tanyard and has been a great success for the young people that have attended. It takes its name not only from the historic field in the middle of Henfield but also links us to the name of the old Henfield Scout Group’s Venture Scout Unit name that was disbanded when Spitfire Explorers was formed.
Already some of those former Tanyard Squirrels have successfully completed not only Squirrels but also Beavers and are now enjoying and having great adventures in Cubs!
With the success of the Tanyard Drey and the growing waiting list for Squirrels in Henfield , this summer we have formed our second Drey. This one is named Kings Drey, taking its name from the Scouts Patron and Monarch, but also signifies the link with another key Henfield Green community space of the Kings field
Already our Squirrels have been out hiking and learning to navigate, been helping at the community orchard and been visited by the Henfield fire engine as well as conducted science experiments and games .
Kings Drey runs from our current home at Hillside Scout Campsite on a Wednesday from 16:30, and does have some places so if you are interested please get in touch. We already ready have an excellent nucleus of the Section team already on role trained but are keen to have more members join this team.
